Insurance tips for a 17-year-old
Get quotes before you buy. The exact trim, engine and year changes the insurance group. Run the specific car's registration through a comparison site first — they quote 17-year-olds with no problem.
Black box (telematics) saves real money. A monitored policy is often 20–40% cheaper for new drivers, and good driving drops the renewal too.
Add a parent as a named driver on the policy — it usually lowers the price. But the policy must be in Joshua's name if he's the main driver: putting it in a parent's name instead is called "fronting" and it's insurance fraud.
Small engine, no mods. Stay at 1.2 litres or below and avoid modified cars — insurers hammer both at this age.
Check the group yourself. Groups listed here are typical for the common versions; confirm the exact car at a group-checker site or with the insurer before handing over money.
Budget beyond the car. Insurance for a 17-year-old often costs as much as the car itself (£1,500–£3,000/yr), plus tax, MOT and fuel. A £2,500 car with group 2 insurance beats a £4,000 car in group 8.
